Once a Canada Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) has been issued it is not possible to update or change the application information. This includes changes to personal information, passport details, or any other data provided in the eTA application. However, there are other steps you can take depending on the nature of the updates needed.

Scenarios where you will need to apply for a new eTA

If your passport details change

If you get a new passport, you must apply for a new eTA. The eTA is electronically linked to your passport. If you get a new passport, the existing eTA becomes invalid.

When the change to your personal circumstances significantly affects the information given in your eTA application (for example, a change in citizenship, as this would mean a new passport), then you should reapply.

Typographical Errors

If there are minor typographical errors in your eTA application (like a misspelled name), you cannot correct these on the existing eTA. You would need to reapply.

If you made a mistake on the eTA application form and wrote your passport information incorrectly, your application will likely be rejected or refused and a fresh application will need to be submitted.

Scenarios where you will NOT need to apply for a new eTA

Changes in Circumstances

For changes in circumstances not related to passport information (like change in employment, address, etc.), you do not need to update your eTA. Even if your email address is incorrect, you can check the status of your eTA at anytime online.

Ensure that your current eTA is no longer valid before reapplying by checking the status or confirming the information you provided was incorrect. If your eTA is still valid and the information changes are not related to your passport, you may continue to use your current eTA.

If in doubt, consult the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) website or contact them for guidance.

In summary, a Canada eTA cannot be updated once issued. If your passport information changes or if there are significant errors in your eTA application, you will need to reapply for a new eTA using the correct details. For other changes, such as address or employment status, an update to your eTA is not required. Always ensure that your travel documents are accurate and up to date before traveling. You can check the status of your eTA anytime by visiting the eTA status check.
